There is no rhyme or reason to this but 77's, both auto and manual got the T-case strut (as per the MPC catalog), 73-76 auto's got the strut.....73-76 manuals did not get the strut.

Doesn't sound like the chain jumped a tooth to me, that issue doesn't "self correct" itself, your issue sounds more sporadic in nature, i'd hate to tear into the front end of the motor for nothing, it sounds more electrical in nature to me e.g. ignition coil, module or pickup coil, like Milion...
