not sure if this will apply to you or not, but before you go all out tearing into it, mine was doing the same thing ( although i have the electronic dash selector), all i did was engage 4hi, put it in reverse and backed up about 5 feet, the put it back in drive and it kicked in....been fine ever...
sounds to me like your pump is just about to take a crap, if its that hot that prolly why your smelling burning fluid. i would suspect a bad pump since you said the levels are good yet you here the whine like it was low or empty.

i had mine done last spring, when they finally got the real parts in to fix it properly,( not just the jumper they used as a temp fix)and if you never had it done, it shouldnt cost you any, unless those recalls expire
