Would a ZF 5 speed from a diesel work? Sorry I didn't mean to hijack this thread.

No different gear ratios I wanna say one is wide ratio the onther narrow?
Gas is narrow
Diesel is wide????

I'm quite likely wrong...
If you build a tq motor would a diesel trans be of benefit though???
That's another question.

I know the 460 ZF's have a lower 1st gear than the diesel ZF's......321 is a little high...buddy of mine just rebuilt his a few months back for around 230.....

BeenThere&DoneexactlyThat, got pictures and everything, you can prob'ly
find the write-up here on FTF with a simple internal search.
*ZF* is what I use on f'inFTE.

Since everything looked so good inside mine, I decided to experiment and
-only- do the synchro rings to see what it was really like.

...turns out it's really noisy! LOL :)

I had the bearings and everything but -I- don't see working on stuff like
this as a p.i.t.a. so don't mind doing it twice. In the process I learned-ed
something, see? :)

Next time I'm going to do it the best I can, in the meantime I've bought 3
complete synchro-sets and 2nd and 3rd gear and realized here lately that
I want to buy a reverse gear too.

I'm not sure what's causing the noise! :/ So, I plan to take "mi Branca ;)"
to "the best ZF guy in Tucson" and let 'im drive it and so insuring I get it
super nice and quiet the next time. ;) BTW, I'm not talking about gear
whine, I like gear whine, it's got some other gawd-awful noise when under
a-low-RPM-load. And it's just plain ol' loose and noisy in general too, the
bearings need/needed to be -preloaded- and/or renewed even tho they
looked like new. Maybe -only- from a lack of preload? :) I'll find out and
post it.

My ZF is out of a 188k mile '90 F250 "company truck" and so was treated
pretty bad and a guy could double that mileage to get a more realistic
picture of certain problems.

If your ZF isn't acting-up in 2nd, 3rd or Rev ...then new synchro rings
(complete sets?) would fix you right up.

Parts list with numbers and prices on request, but first, is yours a
1307-050-050+1307-050-050, or what?

The diesel ZF's have a different bell than any gas motor, not a straight bolt on swap...

Only two holes will line up, everything else has to be reworked. The lineup pins are located different, the top 4 bolts are not quite in line either. Weird thing about that is that the diesel, by design, has an adapter from the block to the bell housing. Seems a bit more cost to have the differing bell pattern... they had to make different tooling to be able to produce it.

The 460 ZF's are the ones that are pretty much interchangeable between them and the diesels...you have to drill one or two holes to get it to bolt to a diesel.

The info I stated above was for diesel to 460 type bell. The smaller pattern is totally unusable on a diesel.

Upon thinking this out more, ill probably take it in and have it done.
Its really not something I wanna mess with, if I had my tool chest anda bench that I could insure nobody would touch I would do it. But I have none of that here. So ill let a shop do it.
