Why would I find plastic pieces in my oil pan?

If I decide to tackle this myself first, what exactly do I need to order and from where is the best to get it? I have seen references to a "timing chain kit". Thanks.

Be sure to get the cam locks so the cams dont spin and move out of postion. Try to replace the chains that is probably why the chunks ended in the oil pan anyways. Make sure the hydraulic tensioners are cleaned and Good Luck.
