I never realised that the crank shaft pulley on these old 5.8l trucks was a "two piece unit". I cranked over the engine, it roared to life, and there was promptly an annoying clunking noise. I shut down the truck, and there in between the block and the pulley is a round disk shaped... thing. I don't know what it is, or why its there... any input would be much appreciated... in other words help please, for the love of god... cause I'm stranded in the middle of southern Alberta and need to get back up north for work, my manager has been fairly understanding so far but I'm not to sure of his mercy.

Harmonic balancer do not run truck till fixed!!!!! Will cause serious issues

Its there to balance the engine. Its needed cause the engines are not internally balanced. Need to pull off crank pulley. Then using a harmonic balancer puller take off old. Get a new one and use a harmonic balancer installer do reverse of tear down.

sounds like the rubber ring inside the balancer failed. They are known to slip as the ubber ages, never actually heard of one fail before.
