Transmission

Hey guys i have a 1990 Ford F-250 with a 460 and a five speed manual transmission. A couple years ago i burnt the clutch up while pulling trees over with the truck and had to replace the clutch. After replacing it i notced a noise developing in 4th gear that would range from 25 to 35 miles per hour. It seemed to get a little better and worse with time and I noticed the same noise in other gears like 3rd and maybe a little in 2nd.

Im woried that when the clutch got hot it transfered heat through the input shaft and to the main drive bearing and the bearing lost oil and was damaged. Id like to rebuid the transmission and get any worn out parts replaced and while im at it get a new input shaft. Do any of you know a good place where i can get new gears and any parts i will need for a newer truck like mine.

Also any theories of what the noise may be would be apreciated.

When you get it rebuilt they will should swap all bad parts out . Just sounds like trans is getting worn. The we had zf last a long time and be noisy.

Good luck

An input shaft bearing, or "pocket" bearing will cause what you're talking about. All those gears are toward the front of the trans (fourth is right next to it). Thats why you have the noise there, and not in fifth (fifth is in the rear)

i take it its safe to drive the truck a little before i rebuild it. i dont want to damage even more but its the work truck so i gotta drive it everyonce in a while

At some point, do you want to rebuild the ZF-42 yourself? :)

Just scanned all this stuff last night...
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/etc/

The idea is for a guy to print them, that's the -only- reason I didn't turn the
exploded view (and its list) sideways. All the detail is there for the printer. ;)

Scanned that for a guy on FTE but don't want that URL on that stinkin' FTE
site! :/ He'll get it in an email or not get it. LOL :)

{edit}
Just scanned the assembly and adjustment section, getting it apart is like this...
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/zf3.jpg
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/zf2.jpg
But slamming it down to take it apart damages a special snap ring that you can
replace easy as pie...

The little snap ring is there just to show how much I changed the shape of the
"eyes" on the brand new gold one I bought at Ace Hardware (2+1/4").

Man, I couldn't believe my ears when the guy at the bearing shop said "we quit
stocking retainer rings". :( Huh?
