Testing Vacuum Advnace

What is a good way to test a vacuum advance? I have heard of people saying take a screw and unplug the vacuum hose then put the screw to block it, if the truck runs the same then there is a problem....


I dunno so I thought i'd ask you guys

hook a vac gauge up, have somebody else turn it, if you get vac, good to go.
If not problems...

Pop the distributor cap off and physically look to see if the arm moves when vacuum is applied to it. Use a vacuum pump with gauge, the gauge should stay stationary and not bleed down.
