Steering wheel compatability

I searched the forum and unless I overlooked it this is not mentioned. I would like to remove the aftermarket steering wheel and replace it with a used OEM / NOS one. I have found a few, but the best one has cruise control buttons. On my '79 4x4 are the steering wheels interchangeable, say for '78 and '79? I have tilt column, automatic.

The horn pad has nothing to do with the wheel as the horn pads are interchangeable


You will need a 77-79 steering wheel because of the size of wheel and the splined mounting hole

1971/77 & 1978/79 Steering Wheels & Horn Pads

The horn pad has nothing to do with the wheel as the horn pads are interchangeable.


You will need a 77 -79 steering wheel because of the size of wheel and the splined mounting hole.

(sigh) 1977 is not the same steering wheel as 1978/79. The horn pads are also different.

I have a steering wheel in decent shape sitting in my basement for a long time now. I can take pictures if interested.

How does one weed out the LIARS or those who stretch the truth on here then ?

I was sure it was 76 the last year for the other style

My 77 was supposed to be original and it has the same wheel and center as the 78

You have the same Ford parts catalogs I have. Look the puppies up...1977 is different than 1978/79.

So it looks like the ones with cruise buttons will fit any same year stock column with no issues like turn signal / shift lever? The '78 and '79 steering wheels will interchange and horn butons will swap?

Applications: 1978/86: F100/350, Bronco & Econoline.

2WD/4WD, with/without tilt wheel, what T/S switch is used, makes no difference as to what steering wheel is used.

All you need is the correct horn pad. See post #4 for the three different types.

Sounds good. I located an OEM with woodgrain and cruise buttons in pretty good shape but wondered about fit. I may add cruise later, if so I will already have the buttons for it. That will not happen though until I resolve the steering / drag issues. Thanks for the help!

With that you won't have a horn though
