I have done it backyard mechanic style, but I don't have any real knowledge about them, other than combining a couple to make one work.
 
I have replaced bushings and brushes, but I'm not equipped to dress the commutator ring or check the field.

How come you dont want to get a reman/new one. My ACDelco one was like 100 bucks give or take.

That is sac religious(spelling?)And it can be cheaper to do it yoiurself...I've taken them apart and cleaned em and they usually last me another 6 months...but never rebuilt like Tony and uhhh that old trucker guy.....

I have cleaned them up also. I can't buy the kit for the price my local rebuild shop charges. I gey starter and alt redone for $105 . Go for it .
