I need help on energizing an alternator

Did you ever get this answered?
Did you mean "polarizing" a -generator-?
Are you working with a generator and not an alternator?
You done knowed it already, that they use different voltage regulators? :)

The alternator needs a 12 volt source to turn it on. This usually comes from the ignition switch so that it can be powered off when the engine is not running.

I'm replacing the generator with an alternator

What type alternator and how many wires does it have - is it an early one that needs an external regulator or is it a self regulating one?

well its a 63 fairlane the generator was shot so im replacing it with an
externally regulated alternator but i cant seem to get it to charge its
a 200 inline 6
Oh yeah? ...what's so "shot" about it? ;)

Just bearings, brushes and commutator, the windings open and/or shorted?
I swear, there ain't nuthin' wrong with that generator that can't be fixed! :)
