how to tell if I have limited slip rear end?

The truck I'm getting is a '94 Xlt shortbed with a 302 and 4wheel drive. The owner told me it has a limited slip rear end, how to tell? And I see by my Haynes manual it needs friction modifiers added to rearend lube.

Also gotta ask.......... How do I shift an automatic locking hub from 2hi to 4 hi? and then back out again?

My owners manual states that I gotta drive in opposite direction about 10 feet to release the automatic locking hub when I go from 4hi to 2 hi is this correct?

I have manual hubs on my current truck so this is new to me. Jim

If the rear differential is original, go to the door tag, and if it's still visible, look for the axle code. I'm not sure if there's two codes for a 4x4, but if you find the one for the rear axle, Limited slip trucks have a letter and a number as the axle code. If the truck does not have a limited slip, then the axle code will be two numbers.

Now, if your rear axle isn't original or you know it's been opened up before, then all that up there is null and void. You can look for a tag that's attached to the differential somewhere, but alot of times those rust and fall off or get caught and rip off.

So if you still can't figure it out then, somebody else will have to chime in because i'm not sure how else to tell without opening up the rear axle.

x2 on the snipped part too. ;)

Get one or both rear tires off the ground and turn one by hand.

If they turn the same direction it's an LSD -or- if there's resistance
to turn the one that's off the ground, same thing.

The 3L25 tag is off the '75 F150 I special ordered with limited slip.
(I was 21 years old;)

Check out the date codes, both my F150's and the F100 parts
truck's Ford9inchers, were made the last week of Jan '75...
5AD = '75 + A = Jan + D = 4th week

F100's door tag...

Axle code "17 J" = rear axle no letter = 17 + J = power steering

H4 = Traction Lok + J = power steering

Find the BOM # stamped into the axle tube. You can research the number and it will tell you every part that went into the axle. BOM Bill of materials
