Help more vacuum routing and square to round headlight conversion

Posted pics cause I am visual. Just bought 1979 F250 2wd Ranger Lariet Supercab shortbed. It was loaded 460/C6, A/C, PS, PDB, Tilt Steering, Big trailer mirrors, hiding slider step, Dual Tanks, Full race car trim, rear slider window, full rear seat, trailer special package. It is a CA truck and live in the mountains though has 0 rust. Having lived at altitude it was exempt from smog checks. After owners death 5 yrs prior, daughter started restoring but was unable. Her boyfriend replaced the carburetor with a non smog holley and it will not pass inspection. The cat, smog pump and most sensors are there but just laying there. Some vacuum lines are missing and or disconnected. I will need some help with reconnecting or replacing these so and smog gurus please chime in. I am also trying to convert the square headlights to the round style in the bottom picture. I thought the round buckets from earlier years would make it easy to convert so I bought a set, but that's a no go, tried it tonight. Can I get a confirmation that the round headlighted 78-79 use year specific parts to accomplish this. By the way if anyone has access to these parts, give me a holler I will buy them. Or let me know how you accomplished it. Thanks in advance....Mo

That is not a Ranger Lariat, because it does not have the tailgate finish pieces, such as the black and chrome piece that goes up near the tailgate handle and there are differences in the interior also such as the door panels and the seat, the door panels on the Lariat have contrasting color inserts either beige or a cream color in the door panels, and the seat in the Lariat also has the contrasting color in a u shape on the seat back and on the bottom cushion and you also did not have the red badge on it that said Lariat. You might have an F-250 Ranger, for there three levels of Ranger trim in 1978 and 1979, there was the Ranger, Ranger XLT, and then the Ranger Lariat. 1978 F-150 is a Ranger Lariat. The Ranger XLT and Ranger Lariat had all of the tailgate finish pieces the black and chrome upper near the tailgate handle, and the chrome panel that had FORD is black letters on it, and the Ranger just had the chrome panel that said FORD in black letters on it only. My thoughts on the headlights is leave the rectangles in and don't change to the round ones. Hopefully this will clarify the different levels of Rangers for you.

Sorry Jim, truck has had one repaint and it had a few holes filled I have both said tailgate panels and all the Lariet badging, apparently they were faded and the PO removed. Here's one for you, there was also a trailer special badge along with the lariet badging in the Glove box. Here's the Glovebox Door. Like I said it was pretty loaded, even had a period aftermarket cruise control installed. Interior was also partially redone, front seat for sure. Can not attest to it all, I am no expert by any means well except on the first gen broncos, but I have been told by more than a few people that even in the late 70's Fords could still be had with options not always chosen in the catalogs and or brochures, I know that held true till 77 on the Early Broncos. Ultimately I am no purist, I may even offend some with my tastes, but oh well. I am sure when I install the JW Speaker LED headlights some will roll their eyes, one of the reasons why I am converting to round lights.

Swap square for round sure.

If you want round headlight assy. I have them and would be glad to trade you for your square ones.

Thx Holts, what year were yours from? I have these I got off a 75 the other day and that when I realized that the 79 radiator support must be different as the upper mount as you can see in the picture is almost the same length as the bottom one. On the 79 bucket the top mount is significantly shorter. Can you put one of your buckets like I did and send or post pictures for comparison?

Thx. By single are we talking what they are calling the fishmouth ? A pic of the truck they came off of would be sweet too. What is your address to send the square ones, do you want the headlights too(I have no use for them anyway). Mine is Mo Mayorga 127 Elm Ave. clovis, CA 93612-1242 Thanks again...

The 1978-1979 grille is the single insert piece what you guys are calling a "fish mouth" design I call it a Louisville design for it is patterned after the grille in the Louisville or L -Series trucks. You're right, yours is a Lariat trailer special. Where yours says F-250 Ranger , it is black with chrome edges, you can restore the black areas in those yourself, just go to any auto parts store and get a small vial of black touch up paint, I had used a Toyota black to restore those on my F-150 Ranger Lariat for a cost of $8.00, a good place to get parts and accessories is LMC Truck, they are an excellent company to do business with. Their website is http://www.lmctruck.com, they replacement badges for your truck as well. What I think would look good on your truck is a billet grille, I have one in my
1978 F-150 and it looks really sweet and I have the rectangular headlights in mine so it would look good and turn heads too even with the round headlight conversion. Shoot these trucks even turn heads on their own, especially the Ranger Lariats with the Trailer Special packages on them. Mine was repainted by the previous owner, and he had put everything back on my truck. I had bought mine from a friend in the car club that I belong to, I had bought it last summer after I had seen it at a few cruise ins. The Trailer Dpecial badge goes on the bottom center of the tailgate and the Lariat badges that are on the outside of the truck go on the cowl under the model identification badges. That will be a sharp looking truck when you're done. Don't get discouraged, it takes time to get it the way you want it, just do it a little at a time, especially if yours had the major stuff done like mine did, that is how I'm doing mine a few little things at a time

I'll help you with the vacuum diagrams but you have to STOP calling Rectangular Lights...... Square.

If the sticker under the hood or rad support is missing, I need to know the details of your truck. You may have mentioned them but I need them here.

what I have:

1979 F250 2wd
460/C6

a possible Calibration Code and Vacuum Diagram is #8-66U-R0

Mil1ion thanks. Sorry for the square in the round hole referral of the rectangular lights. Not sure of the motor now as some of the stuff the previous owner said was not quit true. Can you id motor and trans by the vin or data tag?

Mil1ion is there a diagram that will show what needs to be there is the truck is also AC equipped?

Thanks for the encouragement BigJim. This isnt my first resto, but it is one I want done as quick as possible so i can really start working on it. I need to really get the carb situation dialed in ( I won(Ebay) an NOS smog legal carb for this truck and am awaiting it as we speak) I went to the salvage yard and bought the accel pedal assembly with the rod as the PO had swapped in a cable with no adjustment, dropped right in. Took off the reinforced vinyl tubing he used to connecct the fuel hard line to the carb(which last time nearly filled the valley with fuel as it was never tightened enough. It will now run without dying although it is running at high idle and super rich as it is throwing some severe black smoke. At least I was able to move it about as i needed to have it backed up the driveway as we are about to leave for the coast. I was able to do the front and side with the clear lens conversions and LED converted too, Still awaiting on the rear lenses. I am going to install 69 Bronco reflectors to keep me legal and small round red glass reflectors were the chrome camper tiedown below the rear side markers are now. Few pics on progress, I got a new interior dome light lense and bulb but the bulb wont light so I will be checking the fuses upon my return. Got out bid on front big chrome for windshield rubber by $3 pisses me off( oh well I was chowing big time on turkey and Portuguese linguica when I should have been bidding!!:suspicious:

I can Id an engine family by knowing
Firing order
Wet or dry intake manifold
Certain casting numbers

Engines like
429-460
351m/400
360-390

All have to have the stroke measured or know the crankshaft ID number
The diagram I posted is for a Calif 460 F250 c6

I can supply other info as well.

I have an exploded illustration of the engine from the front and rear
Plus the parts list/engine
What is the firing order on your engine?
Casting on intake.

Mil1ion I have that info for you. Sorry been off for a few days, got called back Sunday from vacation, dad suffered a stroke and has been in the hospital ever since. VIN says 460ci 4bbl, c6 factory a/c p/s pdb cruise control(aftermarket)HD tow package and cooling, has or had all the smog equipment. Do you know of any manual that actually has good pictures that show all this in photo not diagram form? Or even on CD. If I get this all done and legal I am going to get everything labeled and maybe do a write up. Many of these years go to the crusher because people are afraid of dealing with the smog issue. This is definitely not going to any crusher!

The Vin may state what was original but not what is actually in the truck.

You wanted me to ID the engine but never gave me pertinent info.

Firing order
Casting numbers of the heads located along the ridge of the head and under the valve cover in the oil galley.

I suspect the engine is original but one has to make sure..no assuming.
