Gas gauge?

So i know i dont get great miles on my truck. But to a point its not suppose to be this bad, i topped off the tank (on a 18 gallon tank, hence the dual tanks) and went 50 miles on the trip, next thing i know im at a half a tank. It tends to float around sometimes (goin up hill etc. etc.) could this possibly be the float needing replacing?

The float could be leaking, but the rheostats are a common issue as well because of constant movement.

I'm pretty sure by the gen 8's they went to poly floats, did away with the brass. The wipers aren't the best on the resistor, not to mention the board it contacts is a bit of a joke as well.

Don't know on the Fords, but I learned on the 80s and later GMs, the fuel gauge is averaged while driving... can read considerably off because of the movement.

Put it in Park or Neutral and you get the real reading.

Alright sweet thanks guys. Yeah its bad enough because i am runnin off the front tank, because the back is leakin, so i gotta drop it and look for the leak, and i really hope this one aint leaking either.
