Dome light wiring

I replaced the wiring in my 77 F-250 with a universal kit from EZ wiring and I have a question.

How is the dome light wired up with the door switches? Does any one have a labeled diagram? I got my cargo light and dome light to work with the cargo light switch, but I can't figure out how to wire it for when the doors are opened. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I used a wiring kit from another source on my 76 and had the same problem. The problem has to do with the aftermarket wiring kits are designed around a GM system, which grounds opposite to the Ford system (This was how it was explained to me anyway). I never could get my dome light to work either. I spent a lot of time with the tech support guys from the wiring manufacturer and just couldn't get it to work. I ended up buying a cheap GM based dome light (Under $5) from my local auto parts place. I took the guts out and put the guts into the Ford dome light. Wired it according to the wiring manufacturer's directions, and works fine.

Does the light work with the doors? If so I might try that. I can get the dome light to work with the cargo light switch. I'd just like it to come on with the doors open.

I can email you a nice diagram in PDF format so you can zoom in better and print out if you want.

i/m not sure if you need to use a gm door switch. I wouldn't think so. I didn't hook mine into the door switches.

Buck...you have a wiring diagram for the dome light? If so, can I get put on that list emails?

It's a complete diagram and does include the dome light with the optional cargo light. PM me with your email and I'll send it. I can always try to scan it and post it here, but PDF file seems much better because you can zoom in and what not and print it out so you can take it to your truck

Not to hijack, but do you have one of those diagrams for a 79 Bronco Dennis?

Cool diagrams Dennis. :) (as usual! ;)

The "3D one" isn't in my '75 manuals, first saw something like that in the
'91 manuals, with the harness numbers and all. :)

The ground on the dome light isn't a wire on both my '75s, they are just
a mounting screw like the hot wire, and they had only one wire too.

Neither one had a cargo light tho.

----------------------

After installing a kill switch, (it stopped 'em at least twice! no kidding :)
noticed the vehicle could still be started with the dome light on since I'd
bypassed the kill switch for a dome light, see? The ignition was feeding
back through the dome light wiring somehow. LOL :) "it's a Ford thing ;)"

"hey, look here, we can eliminate this one wire if we... " -Ford engineer

Anyway, so I've been without a dome light for like 21(?) years. LOL :)

Here lately been thinking about separating the dome light from everything
else and just using a dash switch (which was installed ~35 years ago).
Figuring on bypassing the door switches at this point. The dash switch
used-to be able to turn the dome light sytem off so the door/s could be
left open etc.

Lots of reasons to not want the dome light to come on when you open
the door/s, let alone leaving the door/s open for hours on end.

------------------------------

Dennis ever see a list of circuit numbers with a description of the circuit?
Thinking about making one if someone hadn't done one already.

Last week finished up the wiring plans to put a dash mounted C700 ignition
switch in my '91 Bronco and it was cool to see the same circuit numbers
being used, for the most part, from the '75 to the '91. :)

There are a couple different kinds of Haynes manuals. The blue manual is crappy, but the brown manual has more detailed diagrams like Dennis posted. I have my diagrams from a Mitchell Mechanics CD. That's a great diagram Dennis. I could never get a diagram big enough to see clearly and post it.

It should be in your shop manual Ben.

Hmmm...I'll give it a look. The 79 manuals I have are from my dad and I just always assumed the manuals were for trucks only, never even cracked 'em open...so I'll give them a look. Thanks Duncan.

I've never used smilies before, so I don't even know how to do it. LOL :)
Ben, I'd prefer the one over at FSB where the guy uses the stick tho...

My '75 Ford Truck Shop Manuals include the little Broncos and the big tandem
axled trucks too. :)

Over the years I've gotten a big kick out of reading my service manuals. :)
They arrived in late December and the pickup wasn't ready until mid February.
I've had my manuals longer than I've had the truck. :) After gasoline and all
internal combustion engines are outlawed and my truck ordered crushed by
the Rothchilds et.al. ...I'll still have the manuals. :) YMMV

HAHA...thanks Alvin...guess I was just being dumb and to be honest, I never even cracked open the 79 manuals. Guess I should, huh?

Ben, prepare to be amazed while being almost suffocated by the obvious at the same time. :)

I mark the edge of the pages of my reference books and write notes in them too...
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/etc/07-03c-45.jpg

A= Assembly section as opposed to the D = Disassembly section, so many of the pages
and pictures looked the same and numbered the same too, it was easy to get lost. :)

Used a black marker for the transmission section and a red marker for the brakes section etc.

The 1st+2nd synchro sleeve/collar was backwards in my ZF from the factory, it was as if they
had stamped "Forward ->" on it backwards or something. No sweat for the factory, just tell
the assemblers... "with this batch of parts put them in backwards :)".
