i dont get nervous driving mine as far as will it break down or leave me stranded. i get nervous when people decide to cut me off or pull out in front of me. then i think to myself"do you idiots not realize that you just cut off a 34 yr old truck made of 17 feet of solid steel and not plastic and paper thin sheet metal" if i were to hit someone with mine im certain i would destroy their car and still be able to start my old truck and at worst limp it home or to a safe location

Hahahahaha.....love this!

I had a 79 F150 once that got hit by a drunk in a grand am at 70 mph. He was sideways and i got his rear drivers 1/4 panel with my front drivers side. It litrally felt like i blew a tire. I could of pulled the bumper out and threw on the spare and drove it home....but the cop wouldnt let me cause it had a busted headlight

These old Dents are literally Built Like a Mack Truck, tough trucks they are, so I don't worry so much about myself, but more about the foolish person in their little teeny tiny roller-skate of an economy car, where they are being green weenies and putting the environment before their safety and comfort. Smart cars a prime example of this, even when pass my Colorado, they are rather skittery when they go by me, let alone what would happen when one passes my Dent they would be all the more skittery.

My truck was sketchy when I drove it home, super load, huge, giant steel bumper. We passed through a two lane highway with construction going on and everyone was hugging the shoulder as we passed. I'd hate to see what would have happened hittin one of the tiny little cars. My truck would probably run it over and really hurt somebody.

Then my step father was talking about how unsafe it is. It's 4,000 some pounds in steel and sits higher than most cars on the road. Even with no air bags in it I feel extremely safe. Yeah I may bust my face on the steering wheel or something but I won't get crushed.

Now think about if your truck had a huge winch bumper on it and you hit that little car or the truck was taller

Granted, that was a crappy 80s escort, but im guessing most newer cars have roughly the same build quality in terms of structure.

I wonder how a dent would fare against the boat like behemoths that ruled the road in the Late 70s?

True, but when I'm driving with the fam, I'm always wondering what kind of impact the lift has; I think that if I hit head on with one of my 6" lift rigs, the impact would be greatly reduced as the forward momentum isn't interrupted as much as the one in this shot.

I dont know about that Ken....most of todays cars have the sloped front end..a head on collision with our type of trucks, could send us over it, or flip our vehicle's imo..

With that said,I really dont get nervous driving mine...However i do think about "what if " Therefore i do my best to keep things under control and safe, aware of my surroundings at all times, watching out for the other person...I also conduct inspections on my rig {like a trucker would on a semi} before i take it out

^^^^Agreed. This is KEY to driving an older vehicle. I was also fortunate enough to find one that had regular maintenance throughout it's life.

A high speed front end collision yes, but i would think anything below 40 or so having a higher front end would definstly work in our favor

Most definaltly workin....speaking for myself i do a good deal of commuting on country state rts at higher speeds to get to shows and such..but still its alot to think about.......todays common Jeep...what if it was that escort? or another low profile car....

Ya, the brain box is about a must to have handy. I'll be a little nervous pulling my camper this year. Even though it's a light camper, it's still 28ft and this is the first time pulling with my 75.

I wouldn't be concerned if it's been maintained. My Son's truck has been in the family since 77, has pulled horses, hauled over a ton of hay, pulled trailers loaded down with hay, wood,m gravel, and a 28ft travel trailer, and other than wear, the only failure was a brain box that kept us from getting home.

You're right Bob....the science was selling me on "Newton's first law and inertia". When the net force acting on an object is zero, the object's momentum doesn't change." Meaning, being higher off the ground allows less impact as most of the weight is higher, means truck travels more with less impact BUT a quick internet search told me something different.....different center of gravity, top heavy and flipping.

On the other hand, had I been in a vehicle similar in stature to the one I hit head on, I go from 60 to zero real fast, versus 60 to say 20 or 30 with a lifted rig.

I suppose with a roll bar, flipping wouldn't be so bad. :suspicious:

Now THIS....I think yes....slower speeds, meaning not fast enough to have your rig flip 15 times.

Wasn't there a picture posted on here a few years ago of a deadly head on collision of an F150 and a car where the F150 completely went over the car and had very little damage, considering, and the car and passengers in it were completely obliterated? Can someone help me find that?

I hear ya Ken...back in 86 i totaled my first 82 mustang just about head on. an older man turned left right in front of me as i entered the intersection at about 50,I turned the wheel to the right and slamed him in the right front of his caprice with my left front...felt like i hit a brick wall man..i managed to walk away with a concussion only..they had to cut my car in two at the a-pillar to repair it...as far as flipping the rigs..lets do our best not to find out.

I got in a fender bender a few years ago in a small car and going from 35mph to zero or backwards is like falling off a roof!

Agreed on not finding out! smilieIagree
