C6 problem

Hi everyone. I bought a 74 f250 not running. Well I got it running but, in order to get it to move. I have to put the gear selector in 1 or 2. D does nothing but free wheel.Park and reverse are correct. The fluid is cherry red and at the correct level. It isn't licenced so I don't know if it shifts into 3rd or not. Any Idea why D doesn't engage?

sounds like the previous owner may have changed the fluid trying to get it to work.I would check the linkage for proper adjustment first. The valve body could be sticking,you may need to disassemble and clean it. Hope you get it figured out, Randy.
