It sounds like your tranny needs a rebuild to me. They didn't start putting E40D (electric AOD) trannies in until around 94 or so.

If i remember correctly there is a site window or a small slot so you can visually see your bands...
Thats where i would start.

Here's a pic from the B&M shift kit install procedure. You want to make sure the TV cable linkage inside the transmission moves when the throttle is opened, and that the TV plunger also follows and isn't stuck.

FYI.. the E4OD first appeared in trucks in 1989 pedating all other Ford auto overdrive transmissions except the all manual AOD. The E4OD is also related to the C6 trans and shares absolutely nothing with the AOD or it's decendants.. the AODE and 4R70W. Also note that the term "AOD" referrs to an actual Ford transmission here and is not meant to be a generic reference to automatic transmissions equipped with an overdrive gear.
