VIew in ow they started phasing out the 9". It was still used in more work truck built trucks. 8.8 was in lighter duty f150s.

Mine is a light duty F150 someone changed the rear leaf springs. So I am thinking earlier rear end and 80-96 leaf springs.

last year was 86, but you have to look to be sure. they had some carry over of them so some 86's are 8.8's and some are 9's.

As it's been said, the last year was 86. Ford started putting 8.8's in the trucks circa 83-84. Some trucks got the 8.8, others got the 9". I have no idea how they chose which rear axle went in which truck.

I guess I will limit myself on the years of trucks to find a donor rear end so i can get my 8.8 out and a 9 inch in.

One thing to keep in mind, is with the gear ratio. The gas crisis was going on around 78-82, so alot of the 9's have high gear ratios. Mine has a 2.75 ratio. I see alot of others with the same, or 3.50's.
