2010 Exp power steering failure

We have an 2010 Explorer. The power steering is whining loudly. Its gotten worse over the last month or so. Fluid is fine, beautiful red color. No fine metallic particles in it indicating a rack and pinion failure. 37K miles. We have the V8. Steering is fine. The whine is not worse upon turning.

Isn't it odd to lose a PS pump this early? Of course, its out of warranty. Will it eventually seize up or can I drive it for a while like this? Dealer wants $550 for a new pump and install.

Thanks

don't play well w others
I just put a pump on my 96. The pump was around $60, you have to have a few tools, but it's not that bad of a job. Hardest part is to get all of the oil out of the rack, if you don't, the contaminated oil will ruin the new pump in short time.

You will stand the chance of the pump locking up, and throwing off your drive belt, which could be a major headach if you don't make the repair
