1999 Windstar Issue

6L PWR

Kansas Chapter member
Alrighty guys. Friend needs some help here with a 1999 Windstar.

Her front windows stopped working a couple months ago. Mechanic said, without even looking at them, that the motors went bad. She hasn't bothered to fix them because it's too much $ right now. Since then, her back windows quit. Now the headlights suddenly quit. All the other lights are still working at the moment. Is there something that would cause these systems to start failing that's tied together or is it that this van is just starting to wear out on her.

is she around any rodents? someone with a test light can check the headlight issue easily. it is hard to believe that things can go out in pairs but it is possible.

First question Todd, what performance mods has she done to it? smilietease

Just kidding!!!!

When a lot of electrical stuff starts failing, the first thing to check is the battery voltage, to make sure the voltage regulator is ok, and it's not
way over charging the battery. Normally when this happens, the battery
will become toast in no time!

Another thing that will cause a lot of electrical stuff to start failing is if the
vehicle has had flood damage, which will cause the electrical connections to
corrode, and fail.

No flood damage or mods. She's a wuss driving! No relation at all, though I wouldn't mind some relations. :)

I'll check her battery when she comes in on Friday for her, that's easy enough. I check for voltage at the battery while idling, right? Not over like 14.2 volts or so??

I don't think there's any rodents involved. I haven't seen any visible signs in the van of them and I did look because I thought about them eating the wires.

ALrighty, well, she had stopped driving it and started driving her Taurus, but the brakes on the Taurus went out and she's back in this piece-o-crap van. ROFL

I pulled the codes this am and found a P1000. That's it.

Anybody got a wiring diagram of the headlight circuit. She's really only concerned about getting the lights to work so it's legal to drive.

Thanks ya'll!

Radio also not working suddenly. Hmmmmmm. I've pulled the dash apart and gotten to the headlight switch, but don't really know how to test without a wiring diagram. Anyone?

Both headlights look good and I was told they were brand new. The running lights do seem a bit on the dim side, but they and the taillights all work.

Rule of thumb: Whenever something weird is going on, check for a bad ground. I'll see if I can find some diagrams though.

Alrighty then, I've taken loose and cleaned up every ground I could find under the dash and under the hood. That didn't help. I've tried a new headlight switch, and nothing. I've checked both headlight bulbs with direct power and they work high and low.

Any other idears? Is it at all possible that the computer itself is going bad? I just wonder about the P1000 code. I've been told that it's due to the computer not going through all it's self-checks. The power had NOT been disconected for a good three months prior to my reading that code.

Other than the computer, all that's left is to try and trace the wires to find if one is broken, unless anyone else has an idea?!?!? PLEASE, I don't want to trace wires! I've done that enough on pinball games. :(

BTW_ If it comes down to tracing, a wiring diagram would be SUPER handy as I can't find one without buying a whole manual.

Perhaps it's in the fuse block itself.......maybe the fusebox is going bad.....
