thanks, conanski. anything i should look at related to that fuse panel? is the ignition switch problem you mentioned something that might cause the starter to keep spinning and maybe cause that loud whirring? the engine is rattling all strangely all of a sudden, as well.thank you

oh, okay - maybe i should clarify, i do start it like normal with the key. that red wire just needs to be hooked up to the battery, or else it just cranks & cranks. our assumption is that whatever wire was supposed to do the job of the temporary red one, had been chewed up. i just don't know...
