Wow. I figured rangers got better mileage than that. Might as well just get a full size.

My 97 F250 with a 5.8 and 4.10 rear gets 11 around town and 15 on the highway. I bet without the weight and wind resistance of the rack and boxes, it would be about 3 mpg better. The rack is 108" tall and weighs 1200 lbs. The tool boxes are about another 1000 lbs.

My Ranger gets 21 with a 302. Maybe Ford should install V8's from the factory?

Maybe so. I wonder if the small engines are working to hard to get the economy they should.

I guess you guys didn't get the memo on the new ('09 model year on) gas mileage ratings. They changed the way they vehicles are tested to more accurately reflect real world mileage. If anything, now they're on the low side. Look at the range below the number- 12-18 in town, 15-23 hwy. Nick gets 17-19 in town, low 20's hwy, and he doesn't spare the horses when he drives. That's about 4-5 mpg better than a full-size would get. That, and a 4.0L Ranger is a good deal quicker than a 4.6L in the F150.

I see what you're saying Ernie, and I'm not saying a full size would get comparable mileage, but it seems like quite a trade off for just a few mpg. Maybe it's just because half the time a full size truck isn't big enough for me. :D

It's not entirely logical, but if I can't have a one-ton diesel (which I cannot afford and have no need for), I'd rather drive a Ranger than a half-ton. I really like the things.

Well holy crap Ian, I think I found exactly what you are looking for.

Hold on while I get the info to post.

Good find Aaron- thanks!

There's some law of the physical (or perhaps just the redneck) universe that says the volume of stuff you need to move will always expand to be slightly larger than your truck will easily hold. I've found this to be equally true with Rangers, full-size pickups, and rented moving trucks.

At any rate, a new F-150 is flat out because I can't get the 4x4 with a manual transmission. Regardless of any arguments, be they logical, technical, monetary, or otherwise, I am hell bent for leather on a stick shift.

I cannot convey how important driving a manual transmission is to me, except that to say that to move higher up my list of "things I care about", you move from inanimate objects into people. Is it crazy to care so much? Probably, but, as Waylon said- "I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane."

You wouldn't settle for vinyl on a stick shift? :p

I know what you mean there. I prefer standard transmissions in trucks also. It gives me a feeling of more control, and also you can get more mileage out of a standard.

I'm looking...and while what I'm looking for (well-equipped, with a stick) isn't as rare a combo as it is on many other models, it is the sort of vehicle generally bought by guys (like me) who run their trucks until the wheels fall off, then put 'em back on and run 'em some more.

Did find an FX4 Level 2 (right color and everything), but it's older than I want, especially for the money they're asking- $13k for an '02 with 73,000 miles.

The reason we went new with Nick was simply because you couldn't save enough money to justify a used one. SuperCab 4X4 Rangers hold their value extremely well, and used financing is more expensive (and restrictive) than new.

Used works on a high depreciation item... like my Marquis (which drops 50% in the first year). Not on something that brings within a few grand of what a new one does a year or two later.

That's the other half of it...I'll only look at used if the price is enough lower to justify not getting to own the vehicle during it's "best" years... (I don't need to tell you, though, that the prices of used Rangers can't hold a candle to the prices of used Toyotas. Especially stupid money here, considering that in New Engand, Toyotas rust out at LEAST as fast as any other truck...and they'll ALL run longer than it takes them to rot out.)

Six year old Rangers seem to be around 10-11k...if I can keep the Escort running until next fall, that sum might be within reach in cash...which is appealing beyond the math. (I've never had a car payment and don't really ever want one.)

I've been gone too long.

Looking at the first page of this thread tells me that Ian should move down here to Florida and I should move up to his area.Down here in my area(And apparently in Tony's too),all I can find is Manuals.I have always wanted a White 01-03 Supercab Edge w/Automatic for the last 3 years, and when I see one for sale,I get really excited, only to be bummed upon clicking on the interior picture, revealing the 5 speed on the floor.Talk about frustration. It's that way with just about any Ranger that fits my needs. It's even worse for single cabs.

Best of luck to you on your search Ian.

It really isn't if you think about it. $10-$11 (more like $12-13 out here) for a six-yr old truck with 90,000 miles on it (that'd be average) ain't no bargain. You're hitting the miles where the first wave of upkeep/repairs start happening. Why even upgrade if you have that to look forwards to?

re: car payment. Everyone makes one, it's just a question of what form it takes. The guys that drive older, used rigs make the payment at the gas pump and the parts counter. Guys driving new ones make it to the bank or credit union. If you actually do the math, it isn't much of a difference.

I contend the best way is to buy as new and low mileage as you can afford (which includes new if it makes sense), and drive it until the wheels fall off. This is the key with a new/almost new vehicle- you have a lot more control over the upkeep/maintenance/driving style, which will dictate the long-term durability and reliability.
