1971 F100 overheating problem.

So I bought a 1971 F100 with a 360 big block and 4 speed manual transmission a few days ago. The seller has told me that the radiator is out of a 300 straight 6 motor. Could this be the reason why my truck is over heating? I've replaced the thermostat and burped the cooling system.

What size radiator is it? If it's small it could be part of the problem.

Fan shroud or no?

The radiator in it now is about an inch smaller than what a 360 comes with. There's no fan shroud on it either. It over heats and stall after about 10-15 minutes of driving at about 45 mph.

Sounds like there's more wrong than just the radiator.

Did you test the new tstat before you put it in? I've had new ones be bad.

I didn't. It was a roadside repair, but next time I get paid, I'll probably buy a lower temperature thermostat and test it out.

I'm pretty sure the thermostat is working though. I was bleeding the cooling system today. Air and hot fluid came out after a bit.

Well, a small radiator and no shroud will definitely cause heating issues...

The radiator and fan shroud do not have to be specifically from a 360 either, you can use one from a 351M-400 truck, direct replacement. Can't answer on other motors, but have personally done that one.
