What's this shudder?

1994 F150, 4.9L, automatic, 104k miles.... Just bought this truck a couple of months ago from a guy who said that it had sat up for a long time, maybe years. I notice a slight shudder when it's under a slight load, like going uphill. Not all the time, however. If I let off the gas slightly and then accelerate back the shudder is gone. Cannot isolate the shudder specifically but am thinking that it's a transmission issue.

Any better ideas or a fix? Thanks.

Sounds like the torque converter. You may be able to get away with a FULL fluid change and consequently fix the issue. There is a drain plug on the TC when you pull the little inspection plug off the bottom of the bellhousing. I believe it's a 5/8" bolt. If you do go the fluid change route, it'd be worth it to upgrade the trans pan to one that has more capacity and a drain plug. When you do a full drain on it (including the TC) it should take somewhere around 13 gallons of ATF to get the trans back up to full. When you refill it, pour a few quarts in with the truck OFF, then start it and fill to the fill line. Next, shift through all the gears two or three times while staying stationary then check the fluid and top off as necessary.

13gallons? Does that upgraded trans pan drag on the ground? :rolling laugh:

Not Necessarily Roy lower speeds usually bring out a vibration, but when you get to higher rpm & mph in some cases, it will go away.most vibrations can be felt around the 40-55 mph range.they can also drive you nuts to find them.if they are hidden so to speak.
