Replacing Rear Axle 1988 F150 Lariat XLT

Hi all:

First off, thanks to Blacksnapon for the response re: crankshaft sealant, and four other lads about the fuel pump question I posted in the Gen 8-9 forum.

Would have responded sooner, put have be busy resurrecting the 88 F150 from the dead........literally.

Appears previous owner believed, that if it starts, put it in gear and go! Don't check nothing, or if it squeaks it will stop. Obviously not of the belief if you take care of your vehicle, it will take care of you! The rear axle is in such bad shape that pulling it is the "only way" to go. The bearings are shot, the pinion seal leaks like a sprinkler, and the RABS sensor has taken a couple hits from ........something.

I have a couple of questions regarding the rear axle in this unit. The ID Tag has the following info stamped on it. Top Line-S814P, Bottom Line-3 55 8 8 7J07.

If I decoded it right the tag indicates the rear axle as a 3.55:1 Ratio, 8.8 Ring Gear, NL (open), Manufactured August 07, 87.

Question 1) Is it possible to install a Ford rear axle with the above specs, put equipped with disk brakes rather than drum brakes.Would there be a lot of modifications required to do such an upgrade so to speak. I have to consider the RABS system that was installed in regard to such an upgrade.

Question 2) Into what years did Ford install the original rear axle as noted above. Research indicates this rear axle was installed in F150's from 1988 to
1995 as a directly swappable, no hassle replacement.

Feedback and responses welcomed

Thanks
