after getting some real strange noises i took the truck to the shop and the guy there told me that the transfer case was dry ( nothing was making noises) so they added the proper oil and didnt find any leaks.. they also replaced the motor mounts... think that was my 4wd problem?
If the transfer case cant shift, there wont be any 4x4.

Vince my guess is that there was still just enough fluid on the gears in the tcase to allow it to shift, but not enough to keep it well lubricated. The shifting mechanism in these transfer cases is purely mechanical, not hydraulic, as I'm sure you know.

So yeah I'd say it's quite possible that no fluid in the tcase could have been causing your problems.

I have to agree...When I was low or out, when I put the truck back to gether, it wouldn't come out of 4x4 lo range! I drove it prolly 6 miles down gravel before it got enough lube up in it to shift out.
