Air/fuel meters

Hey guys I was wondering.
If you were to install a A/F meter on a Carburetor engine could you perfectly tune in a Carb?
I've been looking at this on.

Ok, this will show just how much I do not know, but that gauge says it works off the oxygen sensor.

I was not aware that the later carburated engines even had an oxygen sensor. When did they start doing that...and why?

I am familair with the vacuum guages, the dwell (chebies anyway), and tach to tune one. Dad still has his old dwell and tach meter thing.

The problem with carburetors is the wear factor. If the shaft that the butterflies ride on,wear the carb body, you'll get an erratic reading. You may tune it perfectly in one setting, but at a different rpm range, or bumpy road, it may change. Its for this reason, carburetors and computers don't play well.
