Seems this winter is going to be one heck of a season and the street tires on the SHO are proving to be a challenge in/on the slick roads...

Anybody have a recommendation in the way of capable snow tires, I've only used snow tires once before and that was on the Toyota...

Personally, I'd think twice about studded ones...yeah, they're better on ice, but they don't help much in snow and are obnoxiously loud at speed and not as good on dry or clear wet pavement (can get downright scary on wet concrete, in fact).

That said...I think the best snow tires available are the Nokians, particularly ther Hakkapelliita (sp?) line. Hard to find in a lot of areas (because their marketing sucks), but IMO the best snow tire on the market. I run their less expensive Nordmann line on my '09 (pic), and am very happy with them, too.

On the budget end of the spectrum, I'm a big fan of the Winterforce line. (Used to be called Firestones, then they dropped that, and I think now they call them Bridgestones, but it's the same tire). Highway manners aren't as good as the better snow tires, but in terms of snow and ice traction per dollar, I think think they're the best value out there.

All of the above are available studded or unstudded, too. My preference is for unstudded, but that's based in part on the conditions I drive in, and the kind of driving I do. Maybe for you, studded is a better choice.

Check Craigslist, too...it's easier here because everybody runs snow tires in the winter, so there's lots of 'em out there- but they do tend to get orphaned when people buy new cars and you can get deals on used ones. (I picked up a set of mounted, studded Hakkapelliita 2s for my Escort for $200 last fall, and I just bought a pair of studded Winterforces for my '97 for $25 last month...)
