1987 F250 Starter Problem

Had a 1987 Ford F250 4X4 gave to me. Previous owner said it needed a ring gear. When I removed the starter the Bendix drive teeth were chewed up on the tops from the lead edge backward to about half the length of each tooth. The ring gear was rotated to check the teeth and it looked looked fine........no adverse wear or broken teeth.

Replaced Bendix drive, started the vehicle about 4 times and the starter did not want to engage the flywheel again. Removed starter again and the Bendix looked like the first, flywheel still looks good.

What could the problem be.

Thanks

Yup, im guessin you have the wrong starter gear in there... Take the bendix gear out and match it to your flywheel...

I bet it lines up just fine now, where the teeth are all marred up.
