starter problem

My 81 f 350 has a 351 w v8. The bell housing and flywheel are from a 300 6 cylinder. I can not get a starter to last more than a day in it. When I start it the starter stays engaged. The flywheel is also grinding about a 16th of an inch off the inside of the starter housing. I did not put the dust sheild on so im thinking the starter is sticking in to far and needs to be shimmed. Ive tryd shimming it by putting washers between the starter and the bellhousing but still no luck. Anyone ever had this problem? The sylinoid is also new.

I had the same problem on an 81 bronco. Same situation, 351w swap where a 300 was. Mine did have the shield in place and still wouldn't keep a starter. I never found a solution. You might try to cut a dustshield up to make it work as a full circle shim.
