My question, for anybody. What is bearing crush and how is it measured.

What it is:

In order to prevent bearings from spinning, bearing inserts are designed to extend beyond the parting line of the bores. This is what the manufacturers term "bearing crush." When the caps (rod or main) are tightened, the bearing crush provides a high degree of friction between the backs of the bearings and the bores. Without crush, the bearings could easily turn or spin in their respective bores.

How to measure:

Pretty good answer. Not only does crush keep the bearing shells from spinning, it also keeps them round and square to the bearing bore.

I am still accepting callers on how to measure however.
 
You measure it with plasti-guages. place them in the bores, assembling all to specs, torque and remove. check against the chart on the package.

Yeah, what they said!Ok smarty britches! Whats a crush sleeve, and hows it get crushed, then measured? (careful, this is in a different place)

A crush sleeve is used in the assembly of your differential's PINION. It can be measured either thru trial and error, orwith a dial indicator after proper lineup of ring & pinion lash.

That does not measure bearing crush, that measures clearance.

Crush can be measured several different ways, lead wire is one, which is the most precise and most difficult to do. The other is torquing up the cap and then releasing one side, leaving the other torqued up. The measurement on the side you loosened using a feeler gauge between the cap and block/rod add .001" and that is the total crush on the bearing.
