Vgt Learn

For those that have read some of my posts on the "other side", you know I preached heavily about relearning the vgt, or doing a "turbo relearn". A nasty little glitch has surfaced with the IDS, that Ford dealers use for any reflash. After you do the relearn, then do a test drive, if you perform any tests other than KOEC, relearn is cleared.

Hey Vince

For those of us that missed that, could you repost the gist of the why's and wherefore's of that. I don't remember ever reading about this, and I'd like to know more about it

Sure would like to know more about THIS, too. I know just enough about what you're talking about to know nothing about what you're talking about. And you've DEFINATELY piqued my interest

Many people had issues with their 6.0 diesel after some of the infamous "reflashes". One was a loss of power. What was going on, the pcm needed to "relearn" the turbo and egr valve operating strategy. After performing the reflash, the tech was supposed to do this "relearn" before releasing it to the customer. This amounted to getting the motor up to operating temp(EOT over 150 degrees), clearing the KAM, then starting the engine, and allowing it to idle for five minutes minimum. That is the relearn process. Unfortunately, because of the extra time, many techs would eliminate the process. The glitch would erase the relearn even if performed.

The comments of "Conspiracy by ford to de-tune their engine to correct their mistake" really got pretty bad.

Vince,

Since I just dropped this 2004 6.0L in my baby, should I need to do anything like a re-learn to help it out?? If so, is this something I can do??

Thanks. :)

Get the operating temp up, disconnect the batteries (the only way the customer can clear KAM) for a couple of minutes, then re-connect and start the engine letting it idle for five minutes or so (you wont hurt anything if you let it go longer). Then shut off, and perform 2 key on-off cycles.

So is the clearing of the relearn an error in the latest FMC programming or is this one of FMC's "better ideas"?

Its just a glitch in the IDS hardware from what I understand. You have a panasonic toughbook mated to a vcm made by snapon, running FMC software. Somewhere there is a lack of communication.
