thoughts on a truck like this?

Buddy of mine just got serious about replacing his current ride ('07 Escalade) and he's thinking about a 3/4 ton diesel pickup.

This one I just pulled off AutoTrader, but it's about as close as I've seen to what he's looking for. (Right color, right cab/bed, right powertrain, etc.)

Thoughts on these trucks? Primarily as a daily-driver, but he does want to be able to pull 10.5-11k on occasion (hence the fullsize diesel).

If history is an indicator, he'll probably hang onto it for a couple years, and dump it after 40-50k miles when he gets bored and a few big repair bills start looming.

My brother has had very few issues with his 6.4L and seems to very happy (63k miles on it now). My only gripe with that truck is that it was topping out at 15 mpg right from the factory. And that's driving very conservatively. He doesn't worry about the mileage but make sure that your friend isn't worried about it either. His is a crew cab long bed 4x4.

He's not overly concerned about MPG, but at 25k+ a year, I have to imagine its a significant line-item in his budget.

If you saw the Ford mechanics standing on their heads to work on them You 'd buy something else . Even stuff on top motor takes hours to get to . And at 6 to 10 trucks a week with issues in that garage and I live in woods. I wont buy one.

I just bought a 2010 F-350. First drive, I got 22mpg's on the highway. The great thing about diesel is that they're versatile in performance. Throw a couple of bolt-ons on the motor and plug up a programmer and you get a few easy extra MPG's.

He ended up with a different '08 F-350.

SC/LB Lariat with the 6.4. Haven't driven it yet but I rode 100 or so miles in it- nice truck. Last two diesels I spent any time in were a '95 F-350 with a bad shifter boot (lotta noise come up around that stick), and a '98 Cummins. 'Spose it goes without saying this one was a little quieter.

Got some miles on it (130k), but he's happy with what he paid for it.
