Oil Change - Scheduled Interval (What to do)??

After so many years of staying at the "strip hotels" I have grown tired of them. I have stayed at the MGM, Flamingo Hilton, Bally's and a few others that I find them sterile and boring.

This time, we stayed at the Fitzgerald downtown for $39.00/night!!!! The week before Christmas is a slow week and most hotels just want you in their casinos to gamble. Next time, I will stay at Binions.

I find the downtown Vegas hotels to be more friendly and one can smoke cigars without everyone looking at you funny... for me they remind me of the "old Vegas".

You stay at the Wynn... dam... you must be a high roller Bob!!! That is one expensive hotel. I did drink a Martini there and it cost me $11.00/ea at the bar at the back of the hotel overlooking the golf course!!!

Actually, I miss the old Desert Inn hotel that used to sit where the Wynne does now.

Depending on our travel plans, may have to stop back in Vegas on the way home and try and win my money back!!!!

Well... I am back home as of 12/31/08 and my Excursion ran 100% with no hick-ups!!!

What did I do on News Years Day (today).... I changed the oil in my truck!!!

During my drive to/from Kansas City to San Diego area, my truck averaged 15.5mpg on the overhead display (which is very accurate in my case). I was surprised that with all the mountains I had to drive through, that it did this well!! The speed limit in Colorado, Utah and Nevada is 75mph, so I set the cruise at 80mph... and still got 15.5mpg driving through the Rocky Mountains!!!

Kansas City to Denver is flat, but Denver to Las Vegas is a lot of mountains (the state of Utah is in between these two cities as well).

Truck ran perfectly with no issues... and was loaded down with "Christmas presents... and wife's luggage" (no trailer just my loaded Excursion). I believe that the long running time of being on the road, pulling hills at 75 - 80mph cleaned out my motor, EGR valve and exhaust due to the extra flow of exhaust gasses, staying up at temp and making the EGR valve work hard to maintain the proper flow at all times.

Upon getting home on 12/31/08, I now had driven my "ol girl" 1,610 miles past my normal 5,000 mile oil change interval. This means I changed the oil (today) with 6,610 miles on the oil (wow... and my truck was not upset with me).

I pulled a sample and will mail to Blackstone Labs tomorrow... to see what, if any, difference running my oil 6,610 does versus running it for 5,000 miles. I will continue to change it every 5,000 miles, but I cam curious to see if any wear factors or viscosity changed versus my normal 5,000 mile interval???

I now have 139,000 miles on my truck with no major issues!!!!

I think my truck still loves me and felt that it would be unfair to let me down for going past my normal 5,000 mile oil change interval.... but I have promised her that it will not happen it again!!!!!

Oil Analysis Report Is Back - Good News!!!

After changing my oil after a longer interval than normal, I am pleased to report that all is well with my oil analysis.

Here is what Blackstone wrote about my oil sample....

JEFF: Your sampling technique was perfect: you eliminated any and all traces of fuel and moisture that may have accumulated in the oil during the 6610 miles you had this oil in place. The engine still is wearing very well. You ran this oil almost 2000 miles longer than the last, but this Power Stroke engine hardly even noticed the extra miles. Steady trends like this are an excellent sign that no problems are developing. No antifreeze or soot found, and the low viscosity is not a problem (as you know). Want to try 7500 miles? We think the engine could handle it easily.

All values were good except for viscosity which is always low in the 6.0L motor. I would post my actual report, but the forum sees all of my images as to large to post.

I think that since I use synthetic oil and use a by-pass oil filter, that they believe that I am wasting my money by either using at all or changing it every 5,000 miles.

Oh well... I don't care... oil is chepaer than a new motor and with zero problems... I will keep going with my "good karma" routine.

What do I want to upload... anything. For some reason only very small jpg images will upload and all I wanted in this instance was to upload my Blackstone oil report. I just converted their PDF file to jpg so I could delete my personal information and cropped it slightly smaller.... but even as a B&W jpg image the forum will not allow it to upload.

In the past, I have wished to upload pictures of some of my mod installs and only a handful will meet the specs of the site.

Not a big deal, but if my screen name could be given larger "upload rights" that would be appreciated.

The Last oil report I did thay said I could go to 6K but I still change at about 5k. In 5k I will send a oil sample to see how my new turbo is doing.
Had D-kusman change the oil when he replaced the turbo so I didn't get a sample to send in.
So far the truck has been good, only replace egr cooler and now turbo, the engine is running strong.
Beach glad to see had a good oil report.

I saw you mention one time that maybe your pre-luber might have caused your turbo seal failure.....any further thoughts or opinions on that?

I'm of the mind that the engine has more pressure out of the LPP then my pre-luber. But I'm looking into oil pressure gauge. and find some money.

1) Please explain what a "pre-luber does (website)?

2) What does one look like or how is it installed?

3) How is it a benefit?

4) Is it just one part to fail?

5) If using 5W-40 synthetic oil, wouldn't one's truck get oil pressure and flow rather quickly as is?

and it'll work for you. What I like as a free alternative is http://photobucket.com to post all of my personal photos. You can easily organize them and upload large images. They resize them for you upon upload AND give you forum tagged hyperlinks. It's the best option that I've used.

Just changed my oil yesterday... and again I went to long....

This time I went 5,500 miles instead of my normal 5,000 mile interval.

Can you believe it????

I now have 144,500 miles and all is well. Still using Rotella-Syn 5W-40 (CJ4) and Racor oil filters... and not one hick-up (except for me when I drink to much)!!!

I will be due to change my fuel filters (using Racor filters of course) in the next 3,000 miles or so... but all is "good" on that front as well.

Man... can't believe I went over by 500 miles (ha,ha).
