Here are some links to a brief history of synthetic oil & fuel.

Contrary to what some current synthetic lubricant companies marketing departments want you to believe, synthetic lubricants and fuels have been in use since long before these current companies were in existance.

The Fischer-Tropsch process converts coal, gas or biomass into synthetic lubricants or fuel and has been in use since the 1920's. The Germans produced approximately 125K barrels of fuel a day during WWII and countless barrels of lubricants as well to keep their military machine running. Germany has a large abundance of coal but basically no oil.

The US Air Force has begun using a 50/50 blend of synthetic fuel & JP8 in some of its aircraft to reduce its dependence on foreign oil sources.
