76 F350 instrument cluster

does anyone have knowledge as to whether a gauged instrument cluster from a 1978 F250 would be a matched replacement for the 1976 F350 cluster, maintaining same points of contacts for dash lights etc, with OEM 76' electrical connector?

I believe the 73-76 gauges are the same, with 77-79 being different. This is what I've been told, If not, I would be putting the 76 cluster that I have in my truck. I have 2 73-76 clusters

If your truck has the oil and amp gauges you must swap in a cluster with oil and amp gauges. Likewise, if it has idiot lights, you must swap one in with idiot lights. The harness is different.

No. but one from a 75 or 77 will work

So many things changed in 78

Not quite true.

There ARE VARIABLES in the 74's

Doesn't some of the 78-79s also have a "low fuel economy" light?., or is that just for the econoline vans?

Dak

79's have this. Never seen one in a 78.

I have one from a 79 in my garage

My '75 had one and I took the light bulb out and blacked-out
the window while it was still under warranty. LOL :)

It'd come on every time I'd shift gears, it wanted the engine
revved up all the time. It was just an indicator of low intake
manifold vacuum and nothing more.

It sucked. :)

Here's a listing of the circuit boards used on the dentside trucks from the MPC:

WITH GAUGES

'75......................D5TZ-10K843-A - (Before Ser. W40,001)
'75......................D5TZ-10K843-C - (After Ser. W40,001)
'76-'79.................D6TZ-10K843-B

WITH IDIOT LIGHTS
'73-'75.................D3TZ-10K843-B
'76-'78.................D6TZ-10K843-C
'79......................D9TZ-10K843-A

Yes, American trucks up through '77 got a 100 MPH speedometer and '78-'79 had the 85 MPH speedometer. Canadian trucks got a dual-band speedo with a 130 Km.P.H. / 80 M.P.H. face.

That list shown is of Part Numbers not Engineering numbers that are on the part.

Ok, thanks that's what I was wanting Bill. With fordification's information above, it seems I won't be able to put this in my '78?

If I wanted to put it in your pickup I'd study the differences between
what the pickup has/needs and what the cluster's got and figure out
what would have to be done. The sources of information would first
be the wiring diagrams.

But that's just the way I'd go about it. :)

Being careful not to "guess" or "hope for the best" on -any- of the
circuits. I'd -know- what was needed and notes taken as I went and
pour over them until I understood every change and how it'd effect
anything else. Same way I did railroad signals. :) It's a cool game
or puzzle to work out and just for the "fun" of it, I'd do it -> 100% <-
correct the first time. :)

It's all in your attitude, no kidding.

ps- Working on scanning stuff for the ALT gauge swap right now. ;)
