Nothing new here, take a look at a Contractors Special from the late 1960's.

The 1961/66's offered lockable bed storage drawers on the right side, front of rear wheel. The 1967/72's offered them on both sides.

From 1973 to 1979, Ford offered a 140" wheelbase that both the Super Camper and Trailer Specials used. The right bed side in front of the wheel had a huge door that opened. Inside was the spare tire and room for the little woman, if she got too mouthy.

There was another bed (forget the yr~1980's?) that both sides of the quarter panels had doors all along the sides. It resembled a utility box with corporate Ford styling.

The link speaks of the Chevrolet Rampside...ever seen one? Typical GM. While the side ramp was a good idea, the truck used the Corvair rear engine, which meant the bed floor had a huge hump about half way back. This meant that very little could be laid flat. The Rampside died on the vine.
