No pictures here. My build thread is over on the FTE forum, but I’m having to decide whether I’m a body man/painter or not. The chassis and welding are done but bodywork isn’t. Stuhttps://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1289482-restoration-progress-52-f-3-marmon-herrington-with-215-engine-2.html
Yours doesn’t look like his because yours is a 51 while his is a 52. If the 6s you are getting with the truck are the flathead type 226s they will mount to your chassis in the forward set of mount holes. You will have to move the radiator to the forward mounting holes. If the engines are later...
Hmmm, I’m surprised Van Pelt doesn’t have the parts. Next idea is to check with Chuck Mantiglia at Chuck’s Trucks in CT. IIRC he told me he has converted one of his own half ton trucks to the 3HD transmission that is synchro on 2nd and 3rd gear. Stuhttp://www.chuckstrucksllc.com/startframe.htm
Your Parcel Delivery is not an F-3, it’s an F-5 based model. Its Budd type 5 lug x 8” pattern, dually rears, and most likely a 134” wheelbase are the give aways. The column shift was original on these trucks operating the 3HD tranny. And according to James Wagner in his Ford Trucks Since...
I was a bit surprised that it met reserve and sold. So often eBay listings are intended to test, or create, the market. Hopefully the truck doesn't disappear into a collection never to be seen again. Stu
Could be testing the market, or could be aiming at a world market. I recall a conversation I had with Rod where he mentioned a restored truck years ago that was purchased for serious money and taken to the one of the middle eastern oil producing countries. To me there are things that should be...
"Rather rare"? I have the archive of known 51/52 F-2/F-3 Marmon Herrington conversions. There are five F-2s, five, CA, WY, UT, SD, and the eBay one in MI. This truck came from Rod Kruithoff's amazing M-H collection. I've spent time on my back under this truck studying for the restorations of...
There were two 17.5" x 5.25" wheels, both look exactly alike to my eye. Budd numbers 70720 and 73240. These use 8R17.5" radials or 8-17.5" bias ply tires that are about 32" tall. This tire diameter is similar to a 7.50 x 16" bias tube type or a 235/85R16" radial. These 19.5" and 17.5"...
First I'll say welcome. Glad to see another F-3 being saved. Like Havi said there are alternatives to the 17" widow makers that came on our trucks. The alternative you do not want is continuing them in service. The early F-3s (48-mid 51) have 14" rear drums. These prevent the use of...
All F-3s from 48 to early 51 had 14" rear drums. That's why the trucks came with 17" wheels while F-2s had 12" drums and 16" wheels. Modern 16" wheels will not clear the 14" drums in most cases. Ford switched to 12" Bendix mid 51 and 52. Any 16" F-250 wheel 1996 and earlier fits. Stu
Not exactly. Besides length, 122" vs 114", which I know Havi wasn't suggesting as being the same, wall thickness and "C" channel depth are slightly greater on F-2/3s than on the F-1s. F-2/3 is 6.0" x 2.25" x 0.19" while the F-1 is 5.92" x 2.25" x 0.15". Other aspects are shared such as front...
Another rear axle fix is to install custom 4.11s that are available from Chuck's Trucks in CT. Here's a discussion thread from the FTE site where another UK owner made this swap. As for widow maker 17s, so much has been written, and pictures posted, I'd suggest doing a Google search of my user...
If I may add to or modify Tim's point in favor of an F-2 over F-3. Any F-2 will be a good choice, I agree. The early F-3s, 1948 to early 1951, have 14" rear brake drums that necessitated the 17" widow maker wheels which must be replaced.
In late 1951 Ford converted the F-3s to 12" rear...
Those stock 17" widow maker wheels should be replaced. Replacements are out there and will depend on whether you have the 14" drums supplied in early '51 or 12" supplied in late '51 and '52. The 14" drums won't accept standard 16" F-2/F-250 wheels, but the 12" drums will. If you have 14"...
Add my welcome. This is a real good group, you'll get lots of good input here. Besides my Fords, I'm a closet Dodge (not Ram!) guy too. That B1PW126 project out in the barn calls me every so often.
Welcome. Truck frames were all 34" wide through 1972. So an F-100 or F-150 axle should be a bolt in swap. Something I've read sticks in my head that complicates the '72 swap. I don't recall what it is but don't think it's a deal breaker. Good luck with your project. Love the '51 and '52s. Stu
Does it help to know that the 6 cylinder core support holes are exactly three inches forward of the V8 holes in the front cross member? My inner fender panels are buried out in the barn, and cold too. That measurement is center to center of the holes. I checked it on my project truck frame...
Well, yeah, I can send them. But wouldn't it be easier for you to just right click then highlight the "save picture as" option to save them to your computer. Stu
The closest of the '51 standard colors would be Silvertown Gray or Grey, not sure which. I have two '51 project trucks that were this color originally and it looks more blue than gray IMHO. It wouldn't be confused for white I don't think. Stu
White wasn't one of the standard colors in '51 or '52. But could have been a fleet color. Late '51 and '52 data plates give the color codes for the trucks. An "SS" for special paint would signify a fleet color. Early '51 might have a color code on the cowl stamping to my understanding. But...
And ya know, fool that I am, I didn't save that part. Go figure! As nasty as the thing looks, it had rust free rear cab corners which I saved, good grille, Magic Air heater and tubes, and misc other stuff. So maybe some of those bits will go back on it when its turn comes.I mentioned...
Maybe this is hijacking but, on the topic of saving old wrecks from the crusher, I have no illusions about what others thought seeing me haul this p.o.s. home from the cannons of southern Oregon. Felt like I was living a scene from Deliverance! Plus, I was then very self conscious parking it...
Wayne pretty much said it, but I'll add a little. The early 14" F-3 rear brakes were changed to 12" Bendix in mid '51. Any '97 and earlier F-250 HD wheel will fit, as will more modern Dodge 3/4 ton 16s and 17s. To use the stock hub caps there are a few options. One is to find original 16"...
I'll add my welcome. Great story of your rescue of the truck. I too have greatest interest in the F-2s and F-3s. For many they are under appreciated, but were in truth the workhorse of the pickup line. Good to see another being saved. Stu
Scott - check the SD Craigslist. There's a running '57 F-500 that looks to be a 142" listed in Mobridge for $1250 asking. IMHO a '57 is the best one to have. I'd do a link but don't think I can do that from the phone. Stu
Scott - I'll be going up to SD tomorrow night with a buddy that is picking up a car, and while in the neighborhood will also do a parts swap with Mark, Thundersnow70. I'll then spend most of Saturday morning at Mark's favorite yard. I'll have my tape measure with me and will see what I can...
