351W questions

Hey guys. Long time no post.

I got a 77 LTD II (i know not a truck) with a 351w that is...iffy. Its sat for many years after it jumped time.

Anyways..

Im curious...if i bought a junkyard 351w from a later model F series (an EFI version) could i just swap the distributor, intake, manifolds, etc and run it? Or is it more involved then that. Late model 351s are eaiser to come by locally then older ones, and are more likely to be running.

Ive thought about rebuilding the current one and still may, im just curious.

Its got an FMX trans if that matters.

Im not after performance or EFI, just a reliable weekend cruiser.

Haven't done it personally, but my understanding is that it is just a bolt on swap. You will want to get the flex plate with the newer motor though as that is different.

Might be showing ignorance here but thatll work with my FMX's converter?

I believe Ford kept the bolting pattern equal. Be aware there is generally only one way the bolts line up, they are not equallt spaced on the converter. Other thing to watch out for is keeping the converter in the pump gear - if it gets out, while tightening the transmission to the motor you will break the case, the pump, or both.
