Questions Regarding My '68 390 F100

After much thought I would like to "walk back" that last statement and offer a further explanation into my frustration.

This is my first round of ownership of a vehicle from the 60s and I've just been driven nuts with not being able to track the problem on such a mechanically simple vehicle.

Its probably something simple...Its the simplest things that get you!....

Update:

SHE LIVES . . . . . . sort of.

I turned on the lights before starting and noticed they died when I tried to start it. I tugged the neg battery terminal and the wire slipped right out of the connection. After cleaning and reconnecting the wire and spraying some starting fluid into the carb, the truck fired right up without like it was meant to be.

She dieseled a bit when I shut it down, but a little carb tuning should fix that because when I turned the idle screw down it dieseled less. Finally a turn in the right direction, lets see if we can keep it going!

Thanks for the update.

getting closer to that all clear it run, that i waiting on hearing :). old machines, trucks and cars are never headache free they just less nagging then a wife, but just as needy, and almost as rewarding.

After cooling and a little starter fluid, I got her home.

It died while idling in front of the store and the ignition control was very hot to the touch. I believe that the ignition control is getting too hot and shutting the truck down so I either need to move the module inside the cab or somehow isolate it from the insane heat generated under the hood with the headers and exhaust leaks (warped headers).

On a positive note, the floats are good along with the idle and it no longer diesels upon shutdown.

If you have exhaust leaks at the heads & headers ,then your losing
power!
Its not good to have leaks there!

I would start with sealing those up!...:)

^^Agreed, I also need to do the drums all the way around, it pulls really sharp to the right under braking.

I drove it to work and back today, no real issues besides the braking, fortunately I only work a block from home.

I'd like to convert the front to disc, any insight?

I don't have a clue about changing to disc brakes!

However ,I had just did my brakes about a month ago ,....LOL
I thought I needed shoes an bough the new shoes ,my truck was
pulling real bad to one side when braking as well.

When I pulled the driver side the shoes still had a lot of meat on them ,
so I went ahead an put the new ones on ,then when I went to the other
side ,the shoes were meaty as well ,come to find out ,it was just a leaky
brake slave ,that explained the pull to one side.
Replaced that an now it brakes straight!..:)

So you might want to check your brake slaves or just replace them
anyways while you have the shoes off ,they are cheap ,only about
10 bucks a piece!..:)

Finally got around to cleaning the six months worth of mold and dirt off, not a full blown detail but more of a thorough rinsing.

I've always loved the look of a long bed bump.

I never had trouble with the drum brakes pulling on my '71 unless something was wrong. x2 on checking the wheel cylinders. Might also check to be sure the auto adjuster is working correctly. If it gets tight and doesn't adjust out correctly on side, it can cause pulling as well.

Do you have those fender chrome pieces?

I took mine off an welded the holes!
I still have them ,they are a little damaged but can be fixed ,
If you need them ,they are yours for the price of shipping!...smilieFordlogo

If what I was told is correct, I put the truck in reverse, hit the brakes fairly hard and the brakes should auto-adjust. I did that and they seem to pull less. That said, when I was under the truck I noticed fluid leaking from the passenger rear drum so new cylinders are a must.

I don't have the fender pieces so I may take you up on that offer, much appreciated!
