Because I am not poor enough, and I don't hate myself yet...

Here is a boat restoration thread!

Here is a 1967 18' Tom Sawyer. It has a chevy I6 that is not locked up. I am looking for any options on replacing it, but have no idea what I could find that is not chevy that I could get mated up with the Mercruiser. It has sat outside for a looong time. I knew upholstery was gone, and figured I would be gutting it.

Here are a few pictures. I have a few questions for the boat people at the end.

Sitting in the trees for a while:

Nice classic lines:

Engine:

Seats and carpet out:

Floor is a little spongy, then my foot finds its way through:

This is where my questions start:

The hull looks good from the outside, but boat guys I need your advice. I will have to pull out all this rotten wood, and replace it. Replacing rotten isn't an issue, but I am curious about the integrity of the fiberglass.

Has this rotten wood ruined the fiberglass? It feels solid underneath. When I get all the crap out of here, will I have a solid fiberglass hull to work with?

You'll be poor after this project.
As far as the engine, a lot of i/o owners around here are sealing up the hole in the transom and adding a transom extension and outboard.
This gives you more floor space.

I am going to build seating in a different layout than what was in there, I am hoping to maximize space that way. I love an I/O, so I won't be swapping it out. I looked it up by serial number and its a 1969 Mercruiser 200, so now I at least know where to go for parts. I will see if I can get the engine running soon. If I can, that will give the project a full green light.

This is my first boat, I have some ideas for it, hopefully it will turn out as well as I picture in my head. :-)

always heard they were the boats to get... when maintained.. they run smooth... and glides through the water like your a skater on ice... but yours looks like its going to be a lot to get it there... just from the pics i saw earlier it looks like a lot of the woods rotted and highly saturated with water... which isnt a good thing..

I wouldn't say a lot of the wood is rotted, it all is. ;-)

Its a lot of work, but the end result should be good. I have refloored one boat, previously. That was easier though, being a pontoon.
