Rear gas tank straps

I am in the process of removing my 19 gallon metal rear gas tank on a '78 F-150 to replace the sending unit. There are both upper and lower straps holding the tank in place. Do I need to unbolt the upper straps to get the tank out of the truck? If I do, the front bolts have about two inches of mud encrusted threads. I have loosened the lower straps, but the tank still didn't want to budge.

You shouldn't have to remove the upper straps (at least I never have) unless they are bolted to the lip of the tank.

Thanks, Ben. The upper straps are not bolted to the lip of the tank. I did find, however, that I have to remove my hitch because it sticks out past the frame just far enough to hold the gas tank in place. So what are the upper straps for, if they don't support the tank?

Good question...and I always wondered the same...but if I had to guess, I'd say to keep it a little more secure.
