oil filters

Just changed the oil in my '09 Ranger.

Ford calls for filter FL-820S, so that's what I put on there...but I bought an FL-1A for my other Ranger at the same time.

Noticed that the two filters appear identical except the FL-1A is longer (axially).

Anybody know if I could use an FL-1A on the SOHC 4.0 in an '09 Ranger? Are the drainback valves, etc., the same between these two filters?

(Bigger filter is better, right? More total oil in the truck, more filter media...seems like it'd be an improvement, but I guess I don't even know that for sure.)

they arent the same. the threads are different. believe me i found this out first hand.

on my Flareside its a 92 but a 94 engine.

a 92 351 takes a FL1A filter 94 takes FL820s. well i was told originally that it was a 92 engine. so i had bought a FL1A for it and was wrong. so then i ran the casting number to figure out the correct year for the right filter.
