how do you know its a C6? 1990 could have had an E4OD. C6 are pretty tough trannies, might just be low on fluid if it is a C6.
Umm, E4OD I don't think was used until 1994. I could be wrong on this, but it wasn't available in the '92 model. AOD, yes, A4LD, yes, C6, yes, E4OD, no.

The E4OD first started in trucks and vans in 89. the 89-91 trucks had the OD cancel switch on the dash rather than the end of the gear shift like the 92-96. The A4LD was never used in full sized trucks or behind a V8 for that matter, it was used in rangers, bronco II's and explorers.

Well originally my dad was gonna get a 351W, but only with a C6. The 300/M5OD was on special so he ordered that instead, and could get 4x4, LS, XLT Lariat, Towing Pkg... basically a loaded truck with the 300 for the same price as a 351W Custom with a C6.

The E4OD came in 89.

From wikipedia:

1966–1996 C6
1989–1996 E4OD — C6 with overdrive
1980–1993 AOD — Ford's first 4-speed automatic transmission, based on the FMX but with a torque-splitting feature.
* 1992– AOD-E — Electronic AOD
* 1993– AOD-EW/4R70W — Strengthened AOD-E with lower 1st and 2nd gear ratios

Wow, I didnt know that. The AOD was based on the FMX? The FMX is just a renamed Cruise 'o Matic from the '50s. They were good transmissions, thats what my dad has for his Thunderbird project... :p :D

I wonder if the E4OD was only available in certain models in '89 since my dad couldn't order it...

I stand corrected. All the '92 models I looked at with auto had AOD, not E4OD, according to the window stickers. I wasn't really looking for auto anyway. Wanted a manual so the ex couldn't drive it.

how could you tell from the window sticker? the last one i saw said 4 speed automatic transmission, both the AOD and E4OD were 4 speed auto transmissions. just wondering how you could tell the difference without having the transmission code from the door jamb sticker.
