hesitation with 78 ford

Hello All!!

I have a 78 F150 Trailer special. Truck idles fine. It has a problem when going up hill like its running out of fuel and will not climb, it will not pull itself. when you first jump on the accelerator it hesitates on flat ground, but then runs out fine once past the hesitation. Looking for any ideas on where to begin.

Sounds like you need to either change the fuel filter or maybe the pump is weak, as far as the losing power uphill. The hesitation likely is accelerator pump.

That is possible as well.As far as the hill trouble, not so much. might be worth running some cleaner like Sea Foam through the fuel system.

I agree with accelerator pump in regards to your hesitation. Take your air cleaner off, look down into the carb, then grab the linkage. While slowly moving the carb to wide open there should be two strong streams of fuel shooting into the carb. They should start as soon as the linkage moves. If the fuel just dribbles out or sputters you have an accelerator pump issue.

As for not enough power, check your fuel filter, you should be able blow thru it easily. Hold your air filter up to a light. If the light doesn`t shine thru, change it. Make sure your timing is set correctly.

Keep us posted.
