Is it a status symbol anymore?

I didn't sign up for one, but this Black Friday ad made me chuckle. How can it be a status symbol if almost everyone can afford one?

Well, not only does ad the offer to deliver a (extended) rental car to someone, but it's also a car that was formerly a rental prior to this offer, lol. Extended rental (aka, lease) = lower payment because whoever signs up = never owning anything, just pays for depreciation = gets people into cars they can't afford. Hardly status when the guy driving it doesn't own one bit of it; the real prize winner is the car salesman and the dealership.

I didn’t realize a pre-owned lease was an actual thing. So I think people are still safe looking down their proverbial nose at people with ‘last years model’. That said, in today’s throw away culture, I think the smart move is leasing. Might require a little more expendable income, but I’m to the point now, where a new a vehicle every 3 years is way more appealing than tying up cash in an outright purchase, that has essentially a 10 year life span before it’s a valueless asset, where you have to have your ass hanging over a fender years 5-10.

They're all '17's with under 6K miles. We had a crapload of them in the Hertz Fleet, so now I know where they go to when they hit the time/mileage limit. BTW, Mercedes charged us $175/day for every day past the time/mile limit if it wasn't returned to them.

Well I guess only the diehards that know the difference between the 2018ís and 2017ís will be able to look down their noses. Beyond that, Iíd imagine cost of ownership would still need to be considered. And after that, itís like the rich folks that buy a 3c CZ instead of a 3c diamond, just because you can afford it, doesnít mean you want to pay for it. Not exactly like theyíre going to be stealing too many Billy Bobís from the 150 market.

Nope- but I bet there are a lot of wives that are going to get a Mercedes Benz for Christmas! 25 to be exact.

*And actually, if you think about it, that isn't a bad way to go if you wanted a Mercedes. I prefer the Camry for the exact opposite reason- it's a competent car that makes no status statement whatsoever.

Same reason I went from a Mustang, to a Lincoln that you almost have to have an AARP card to drive. Changes the type of attention (or lack there of) you get.

But itís funny you say what you did. Had a discussion with two of my neighbors walking the neighborhood on Halloween. I have my 77 parked in my driveway (garage is still full of unpacked boxes). And some how came up that they use the same Ďdiversion tacticí. I asked what they meant...said, that in the event of local burglaries, what house do you think is gonna get hit first...the one with a 78 Buick/77 Ford/60ís Chevy pick up...or all the ones with a $100k car sitting in the driveway. And thatís precisely when I nodded along as if that were my intent the whole time.

i agree... theyre no longer really a status symbol since just about everyones getting them anymore... they use to be like the higher end porshe, lambos and crap like that.. but theres just too many on the roads now.. ntm anytime you have problems with them you need to special order the parts from germany to get it running again.. boss and one of the other employees in the office drives nothing but.. and eveyrtime its broken down theyve been without the vehicle for 1-2 weeks waiting on parts to come in..

It's no longer a status symbol when one of the monthly "stamp collectors" ends up with a Benz in the driveway.
