Looking for a nice 400 or 429/460

For my 78 F250 4x4. I would prefer an engine that has been built to have more power than stock, 400 w/ upgraded cam timing, 4bbl etc. I am looking for a drop in slightly used engine.

I am in S.E. Oklahoma
Thank you.

You will need to buy aftermarket engine mounts since 460's weren't available with 4WD until 1983.

429's were only installed in 1968/73 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars.

And, what is the casting number of the long block? You will need to knows this as there are TWO different harmonic balancers and flywheels (flexplates).

There were early 460's with D0VE D1VE. ..

In the mid to late 70's D8TE blocks came out

Since the car 429's were designed for Lincoln they were also used in TBirds Thunderjet.

C8VE. ..C9VE ....D0VE.

The journal on the end of the crankshaft is a different size than later ones and they were internally balanced.
Auto trans requires a special torque converter
Manual transmission requires the flywheel from a 390.

There is a guy on Facebook that makes and sells 400 to 460 engjne mounts.
Check the 73-79 f series truck pages.
I don't recall his name.
Blind street racer or something like that

Is this a 4x4 or 4x2. AT or MT?

Dennis, your info is flawed. For one thing, there is no such block casting number prefix of D8TE

429's were not installed in Lincoln's/Continental Marks, were only installed in misc. 1968/73 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars.

1968/77 Lincoln/Marks came with 460's as standard equipment, as did 1972/76 Thunderbirds. 1978 Lincoln/Mark V could have a 400 or 460, 1979's came with 400's only.

460's optional in misc. 1973/78 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars, 1973/76 F100, 1973/79 F250/350, 1975/79 F150, 1975/97 E250/350, 1982/97 F250/350.

460's not available in cars after 1978. 460's not available with a M/T or with 4WD until 1983 (F250/350 only).

Block casting number prefixes C8VE - C9VE - D0VE are the same for 429's and 460's.

Block casting number: D1VE-6015-AB internal balance = 1971/73 429, 1971/78 460, some 1979 460's.

Ford changed the 460 midyear 1979, there is no before/from serial numbers or production dates. The block casting number must be known to get the correct harmonic balancer and flexplate.

Block casting number D9TE-6015-AB external balance, has a weighted crank spacer = Some 1979 460's, 1980/97 460's.
