The function of a water separator is to let any accumulating water settle and then subsequently be drained of periodically. If the fuel supply you use does a good job of keeping the water to a minimum and you don't get a lot of condensation, then you could well go for extended periods with no need to drain. If there is no water trapped, you will get only fuel.
