6.9 or 7.3?

Hello all; I'm new to the forum and fairly new to ford diesels as well. \

I'm working on a project truck and have the option of using a 6.9 or a 7.3. Already have a sidewinder turbo and intercooler along with an 88' 5 speed tranny/4.10 rearend. I have heard that the 6.9 has thicker cyl walls, thus making it more durable than the 7.3, but that the 7.3 has other upgrades, such as better glow plug circuits, etc.

I'm looking more towards getting better mileage then power and was wondering if choosing the 6.9 over the 7.3 would make a difference?

Thanks in advance, Chris

Do the best of both and use an 87 6.9... It has the newer glow plug setup with the thicker cylinder walls. Other than that it is a draw. Cavitation is the enemy of the 7.3, all else is pretty much equal, or can be adjusted to be so. The head bolts are slightly smaller on the 6.9, and the valve design can allow oil to pass the guides. Over all, both are good motors.
