"ratcheting" noise from t-case, no 4wd...

was behind the mall this morning before work, tried to go up a good-sized pile of snow, 4wd was in and working, backed off of it and was going to go around it, turned off the 4wd (push-button t-case) and started to go around, ran the right side tires up on the hill and started to get stuck, stopped and pushed the dash button (left the manual hubs locked in) when i let off the clutch i was still not moving but could hear something, rolled down the window to hear better, sounded like a slip-clutch from underneath, put it in reverse than 1st again and then the front axle was engaged...is my transfer-case about to go out on me? havent had any problems this winter (up until now) ive used the 4wd quite a bit, no signs of oil loss, could the angle of the truck been a factor(ive read wheres theres a internal oil pump in the t/c) wasnt using 4-low, just 4wd high range.......seems weird, any thoughts/ideas?

I'd be more worried about the electronic shifting motor than the t-case itself...but I might just chalk it up to a fluke of gear position, too, since you weren't moving?
